Thursday Reflection

What could you as an individual do to cultivate philanthrōpia in emotional connections, peacemaking, hospitality, curiosity in humanity, matchmaking, health issues, and service to others? As a country, or other large political community?

Emotional connections

  • Teach the younger generation that the world isn’t a competition and that we can all succeed without tearing others down
  • -expose ourselves to other people and form a connection to be informed about their successes and misfortunes and appreciate our own successes first

Peacemaking

  • Working to get rid of our biases based on arbitrary or personal reasons in order to understand both sides of the conflict. Being open to learning about different cultures in order to understand reservations and actions on both sides of the conflict that may otherwise seem abnormal. Being open to different solutions to accommodate all possible factors.
  • Focusing on peaceful negotiations instead of military interventions, acting as peacemakers instead of taking the side of one ally vs another country. Also not receiving or asking for monetary funding as part of treaties and such. Also, it would be important to have a leader who cultivates a love of humanity within themselves.

Hospitality

  • We could be more open-minded and accepting of everyone and their different cultures/beliefs/values. Try to remove judgements or stereotypes by asking questions and getting to know the person (don’t judge a book by its cover)
  • For America specifically, we should prioritize learning about other cultures in our school systems. Implement laws that harshly punish discrimination. There are negative stigmas on a lot of things and we can become a better community if we remove those stigmas by having open conversations. Putting leaders in place who show love for humanity because when someone who doesn’t show philanthrōpia is in power and people are supporting them it makes others feel outcasted.

Curiosity in humanity

  • Having a curious mind that wants to study different cultures. Curiosity is needed in order to have empathy for other people and all humanity.
Enacting curiosity in the education system for other cultures will also inspire a love for other countries at a young age and prevent the chance of prejudice in future generations
  • For America specifically just prioritizing learning about different cultures and stop only teaching about “American culture”; starting this at a young age is imperative. To be true lovers of humanity we have to understand each other and when we understand our differences we can more clearly see our similarities and be more open to accepting one another. America is sort of a selfish country and being a “good person” or a “loving person” to others really isn’t a part of the American Dream. We focus on stepping on others to be successful and if we learn to be curious about one another and appreciate one another maybe that mentality will eventually fade

Matchmaking

  • We can identify what our needs are first. Then be willing to sharing and to listen. Identify each other's strengths and weaknesses. Get out there and being open to meeting people and be less restrictive. Allow yourself to be involved with different groups of people. Have intimate conversations by getting rid of fear and putting yourself into atmospheres that will challenge your weaknesses.
  • Begin to try to desegregate campus from stereotypes. Create connections by using social work or clubs and on-campus activity (accessible to everyone). Things like Howard Day of Service/Spring Break.

Health issues

  • Social distance while connecting from a safe distance (outside events, facetime/calls/texts, zoom calls, Netflix parties, virtual dates, partake in drive-by birthdays) Most people are living the same way so partaking in online activities such as gaming and sharing personal self-reflection can help develop or show personal growth.
  • Encourage the wealthy to use their funds for the benefit of everyone (PAY TAXES!!!!), believe in the science!, tell the people to do their public duty and continue to wear masks and follow guidelines even if there are not a lot of cases. A country or a community could possibly move towards a cause that comforts everyone in a time of uncomfortability.

Service to others

  • As individuals, we can participate in community service projects and organizations on campus or in our hometown that would be geared towards helping and bettering our communities. These may include tutoring children, helping out at homeless shelters, giving food to the homeless, protesting, bringing awareness to important topics within the world, etc…
  • A country or large political community in a better situation could prepare and fund a global institution like the Peace Corps or the U.N. to help countries in need of assistance. They could set a standard for human rights and well-being that must be respected throughout the world. Invest into poor countries not for profit but for the betterment of the country’s situation.

In each setting used learning more about each other as a way to cultivate philanthrōpia. I think this is a big thing because you cannot love without understanding and you cannot understand without listening and being respectful. If everyone starts off by being respectful to others we as a collective (the world) can begin to cultivate philanthrōpia.

In class, we talked about what a philanthropist is in the world today and I found it interesting that even ‘bad’ people are seen as philanthropists from our current definition. I think we need to change the definition because the reading we did this week showed that you don’t have to give money to be a friend to humanity. Teachers and professors whose whole career is to give knowledge and wisdom to there are their own form of a philanthropist because they are helping others in a very essential way. The people who make money to give to the charities would not be able to make that money without the education they learned from the professors and teachers. Also in revising the parameters to philanthropy, we need to think about a person's motives. If their motive is to help just so that others see that, then they are not a real friend to humanity and should not qualify. But if a person generally is supporting a cause because they back it and care then they are a true friend to humanity and deserve the title.

Notes

  • Moana is the story of a young girl who is the air to the heir to a chiefdom of a fictional island Motonui
  • she must restore prosperity to her people by bringing the magic heart back to the island goddess of fertility Te Fiti
  • while both Moana and Maui mentor each other, Moana is mentored by her gramma tala and a little bit by her mother
  • Moana can show us what the future of leadership is like what people see the future of leadership as
  • Water is a very big symbol throughout the movie, but can be compared to both Maui and Moana because in their own ways they are both shapeshifters just like water.

Key Passages

Passage 1

  • menos activated in Moana scene right at the beginning of the story
  • story makes it seem like I Maui has to restore the heart but actually, it is Moana
  • name symbolism scene in gramma Tala -Tala meaning tale or story

Passage 2

  • Moana shows early signs of nurturing/care
  • coronation scene because water picks her can be compared to coronation of being chief on island-like father wants her to be

Passage 3

  • Moana disagrees that I am who I am no matter where I go can be seen and I am Moana

Passage 4

  • Moana‘s good leadership comes from fathers mentoring and personal characteristics that she already has
  • The question for Moana is how does someone move on and keep cultural traditions
  • Moana and her grandmother can be seen as outsiders because of their pool to the water but they are insiders because they are royal family

Passage 6

  • Moana claiming the heart of Te Fiti instead of waiting for the water to bring it to her is a defining moment in her leadership
  • shows growth in how she sees herself and will affect how others see her

Passage 7

Assignment

  • Athena can be seen as grandma Tele because they both activate Telemachus and Moana
  • Binti’s family Is like Moana’s dad because they both decided to decline the potential of the mentee
  • Otalara has characteristics like Maui because they both do things for personal gain Moana differs from Ned because she claims her name A LOT throughout the story
  • Moana is like Binti because she realizes how to create harmony and does it even though they both have to let their guard down and sacrifice their safety to do it. They also both find what they need to lead very early in life (Binti with the edon and Moana with the heart of Te Fiti)
  • Moana shows traits of leadership that Wells talks about

+ perseverance: when she pushes through and tries without Maui

+ self-control: when Maui continues to look down on her but she still stands up and says that I can do it

+ devotion to principle: when Maui tries to explain to her how it will be extremely dangerous to restore the heart but she knows that she has to do this for her people so she keeps pushing through

+ Love for humanity: all of these lead up to her love for humanity because she’s doing this to restore the beauty in the world for her people and the people after her also she’s ready to sacrifice her life at the end when she walks towards Te Ka

Class Notes

Aneyah brought up how she announces herself changes towards the end of the movie she just says “I am Moana” instead of “I am Moana of Motonui”

Arianna brought up the scene where Maui decides to work with Moana because Maui shows leadership to Moana. also can be seen as Moana's proclamation of who she is begins to work

Cam said that when Moana gave up at the end was an essential part because she has to go through ups and downs to get to where she is as a leader

Lettirose said that at the end when she was walking was a key seen. It can be compared to Binti because they both see how to create harmony. Both of them let their guard down to bring this harmony to others

Leadership Development

“How Far I’ll Go” Rewrite

I’ve been staring at all the work I should do
‘Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect student
But I come back to watching TV, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I can not go, where I long to be

See the Netflix and Hulu on the screen? It calls me
And no one knows, how much I can watch
If I continue to watch TV instead of doing homework
One day I’ll know, if I go there’s just no telling how much I’ll watch

I know all the work I have in college is gonna help me more in college
Everything is by design
I know everybody in college has work to do in college
So maybe I can just do mine
I can work with perseverance, make my brain strong
I’ll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?

See the light as it shines from the TV? It’s blinding
But no one knows, how much I’ll watch
And it seems like it’s calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what’s beyond the TV, will I watch the TV?

All the shows that I really wanna watch. They call me
And no one knows, how much I’ll watch
If I don’t do work and watch TV I won't succeed
One day I’ll know, how much TV I’ll watch

“I am Moana” Rewrite

Who am I?
I am a girl who loves my family
I’m the girl who loves to see
Still she calls me
I am the daughter of an abyss
We are descended from those who are free
Who found their way out of tyranny
So she’ll call me
I’ll deliver us to where we’ll be
I’ll work hard just wait and see
I’ll be everything I’ve learned and more
And she’ll call me
And the answer isn’t out there at all, I am the key
It’s like the tide, always falling and rising
I will follow my heart and lead with pride, I decree
So come what may
I know the way
Who I am!
